Only 3 kilometres to the “most kissed girl in Göttingen”.
The historic old town features numerous Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque half-timbered houses worth seeing and a particularly splendid town hall. Göttingen’s landmark is the Gänseliesel on the market fountain in front of the Old Town Hall. In keeping with a good tradition, all fresh doctoral students and professors visit the Gänseliesel, “give” her flowers and give her a little kiss. The Gänseliesel is probably the most kissed girl in town. So if you find the Gänseliesel decorated with flowers and garlands, now you know what it’s all about. Very nice shops and cafés frame the market square. Not far from the Old Town Hall is the Church of St. John. Its most famous eye-catchers are probably the two differently designed church towers. On Saturdays you can take a guided tour of the tower, which rewards you with a wonderful view of Göttingen’s old town.
