Welfen Castle, Tillyschanze, Old Town – truly enchanting
Hannoversch Münden, or Hann. Münden for short, about 30 kilometres from Göttingen, is definitely worth a visit. Hann. Münden is nestled between the rivers Werra, Fulda and Weser and surrounded by forests. It enchants its inhabitants and visitors alike with its beautiful old town. Beautiful half-timbered houses line the streets here, and the historic town hall in the Weser Renaissance style is one of the most important buildings of this period. From the old town, you can reach the Tillyschanze in half an hour’s walk. With its 25-metre-high observation tower, it is a popular destination. From here, surrounded by the Reinhardswald forest, you have a view of the old town of Hann Münden and the three rivers.
And then, of course, the enchanting Welfenschloss (Guelph Castle) awaits you: today it houses the municipal museum, the local court, the municipal archives and the municipal library. After a fire, the original Gothic building was rebuilt in 1560 by Duke Erich II in the Weser Renaissance style and can be visited today in this form. Two Renaissance rooms survived the fire and display murals that are unique in Germany today. This is another reason why Hann.Münden is part of the German Fairytale Route. Hann. Münden is also part of the German Half-Timbered Houses Route.
An excursion is worthwhile: stroll through the old town and enjoy a break in one of the many cosy inns and restaurants, such as the Reblaus or the Ratsbrauhaus.
